Fertility Specialist
Are you wondering if you need to see a fertility specialist? It can be daunting to think about picking up the phone and making the dreaded appointment. That appointment can add more fuel to the ‘I’ll never get pregnant, there’s something wrong with me’ fire. There is a great deal to be gained however by seeing someone who you can at least start talking to.
Most fertility specialists will scoff at your concern of not conceiving within a couple of months; you are most likely to be told to go away and keep trying, “Come back after you’ve been trying actively for twelve months without a pregnancy.” I think you would probably understand that you’re sent away under these circumstances as there is no evidence that there is a problem; you haven’t been trying long enough to meet the statistical point in time where testing is considered worth while.
I tend to differ, of course, from the view of waiting to do testing. Let me clarify what I mean though. Invasive testing is in most cases not needed at the beginning of your journey to conceive but some thorough fertility blood testing can easily be performed and give you a great deal of information about your reproductive health. Some women simply visit a fertility specialist and tell them they have been trying for twelve months and then they go ahead and start some testing. If you can cope with telling a white lie this might be one path you can go down. Most doctors can be persuaded to do some blood tests if you talk them through the fact you want to be proactive.
If on the other hand you’ve been trying for quite some time without any luck then seeing a fertility specialist is a definite must. Fertility specialists are in most cases just that; they specialise in treating women with fertility issues. A specialist will undertake a series of tests and usually will even oversee IVF, hormone treatment, stimulating ovulation and the many other options available to assist with reproduction.
Your fertility specialist will be highly trained specifically in fertility health hence their very specific and well deserved title. Just turning up to your gynaecologist for advanced fertility treatment is not the same as seeing a qualified and specifically trained fertility specialist.
You can expect to receive a very comprehensive set of tests and most importantly test results and recommendations from your specialist and this is well worth doing as early as possible so you can treat any problems that might show up. Remember however that a preconception plan is well worth the effort and will add tremendous value to your reproductive and overall health too.
